What IDEA Says about Discipline
Dixie Jordan, Cora WY
Must we accept discipline policies that punish children for behaviors that are part of their disability? How can we use a child’s diagnosis when writing an Individualized Education Program (IEP)? Should poor behavior be punished, or should appropriate behavior be taught? And what on earth is a “manifestation determination review”? Come to this session to learn how to use special education law to develop an appropriate education for children and youth with mental health needs!
Still have questions or concerns? Drop in to the IDEA Resource Room to get answers! Dixie Jordan will be available throughout the conference to answer questions and offer strategies tailored to your specific situation.
Addressing Trauma through a Peer Support Model
Beth Piecora; John Mayo; Success 4 Kids & Families, Tampa FL; Victoria Hummer, LCSW, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL
This workshop addresses trauma through a Peer Support Model. The Certified Recovery Peer Specialist Model of the State of Florida, gives peers the credentials peers to provide support and advocacy to families with children and youth who are experiencing significant emotional and behavioral issues. This model trains peers on the psychological and behavioral impact of trauma in order to guide a peer’s awareness and assistance to the children/youth and their families involved in service delivery.
Dads on the Move! Leading Change to Harness the Positive Power of Fathers
Frank Rider, MS; Nadia Cayce-Gibson, National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health, Rockville MD
Since the National Federation of Families first Fatherhood Roundtable at our annual conference two years ago, increasing strides have been made in communities across the nation to nurture and capitalize on the many positive contributions that dads make on behalf of their own children, in support of one another, and in helping to develop, refine and expand community systems of care.
By popular demand, the National Federation has arranged another Fatherhood Roundtable as a special pre-conference opportunity for this year’s gathering. Please consider learning from, participating in and helping to strengthen this growing “movement within a movement.”
Join us to learn from some of our colleagues who are doing exemplary work – and from one another – about some of the ways that fathers are emerging as leaders, are being more effectively engaged by service systems, and are reaching out in many directions to ensure that the positive power of dads is being drawn from all the different corners of our American community !
The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes Among Children and Adolescents Receiving Children’s Mental Health Initiative (CMHI) Grant Services
Brigitte Manteuffel, ICF Macro, Atlanta GA
Children exposed to trauma early on in life can suffer long-term negative effects well into adulthood including chronic physical illness and mental health problems. Using data presented from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study, this presentation examines linkages between mental health challenges and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) for children and youth served in systems of care. Family members will discuss successful healing, prevention and treatment strategies designed to reduce the impact of childhood trauma.
